Psalm 135

1Praise Yah! Praise Yahweh’s name! Praise him, you servants of Yahweh, 2you who stand in Yahweh’s house, in the courts of our God’s house. 3Praise Yah, for Yahweh is good. Sing praises to his name, for that is pleasant. 4For Yah has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel for his own possession. 5For I know that Yahweh is great, that our Lord is above all gods. 6Whatever Yahweh pleased, that he has done, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps. 7He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings with the rain. He brings the wind out of his treasuries. 8He struck the firstborn of Egypt, both of man and animal. 9He sent signs and wonders into the middle of you, Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his servants. 10He struck many nations, and killed mighty kings— 11Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan— 12and gave their land for a heritage, a heritage to Israel, his people. 13Your name, Yahweh, endures forever; your renown, Yahweh, throughout all generations. 14For Yahweh will judge his people and have compassion on his servants. 15The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. 16They have mouths, but they can’t speak. They have eyes, but they can’t see. 17They have ears, but they can’t hear, neither is there any breath in their mouths. 18Those who make them will be like them, yes, everyone who trusts in them. 19House of Israel, praise Yahweh! House of Aaron, praise Yahweh! 20House of Levi, praise Yahweh! You who fear Yahweh, praise Yahweh! 21Blessed be Yahweh from Zion, who dwells in Jerusalem. Praise Yah!

Introduction

Psalms 135

This is one of the Hallelujah-psalms; that is the title of it, and that is the Amen of it, both its Alpha and its Omega. I. It begins with a call to praise God, particularly a call to the "servants of the Lord" to praise him, as in the foregoing psalm (Psa 135:1-3). II. It goes on to furnish us with matter for praise. God is to be praised, 1. As the God of Jacob (Psa 135:4). 2. As the God of gods (Psa 135:5). 3. As the God of the whole world (Psa 135:6, Psa 135:7). 4. As a terrible God to the enemies of Israel (Psa 135:8-11). 5. As a gracious God to Israel, both in what he had done for them and what he would do (Psa 135:12-14). 6. As the only living God, all other gods being vanity and a lie (Psa 135:15-18). III. It concludes with another exhortation to all persons concerned to praise God (Psa 135:19-21). In singing this psalm our hearts must be filled, as well as our mouths, with the high praises of God.
